On August 10, 2019, a group composed of members of Hamazkayin’s Paris Chapter Executive Board and friends of Hamazkayin paid a visit to Avetis Aharonian’s tomb at the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. The occasion was the 99th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Sèvres on August 10, 1920.
Aharonian signed the pact on behalf of the Republic of Armenia. The treaty abolished the Ottoman Empire; under Article 89, “Turkey and Armenia as well as the other High Contracting Parties agree[d] to submit to the arbitration of the President of the United States of America the question of the frontier to be fixed between Turkey and Armenia in the vilayets of Erzerum, Trebizond, Van and Bitlis, and to accept his decision thereupon, as well as any stipulations he may prescribe as to access for Armenia to the sea, and as to the demilitarisation of any portion of Turkish territory adjacent to the said frontier.”
