“Preparing Armenian teachers is a necessity,” organizations agree
Haigazian University and the Hamazkayin Central Executive Board jointly held a meeting with students on March 21, 2024. They announced that their collaborative effort of many years, to prepare teachers for Armenian schools, would continue.
Haigazian University president Rev. Paul Haidostian, PhD, welcomed the guests. He discussed the shortage of Armenian teachers and the need for the preparatory program. Hamazkayin Central Executive Board chairperson Zaven Keshishian was pleased to announce that the two organizations, which have been collaborating for over a decade, will continue to do so—as the fruits of their joint efforts are appearing everywhere.
Arin Kalousdian, Hamazkayin executive manager, described the teacher-preparation program. The program covers the full tuition, for seven years, of students who wish to be Armenian teachers and commit to the calling. She explained that students, having completed Armenian school in their home country, spend three years studying pedagogy, one year in a special teacher-preparation course, and two years completing a degree in Armenian studies at Yerevan State University. Thus, participant complete the program holding a BA in education, a teaching certificate, and an MA in Armenian studies. During the course of their studies, participants participate in a weekly online program of Armenian language and literature with an expert teacher. All the expenses, including tuition, annual round-trip airfare, and room and board in Armenia, are covered by the Central Executive Board.
Sarkis Yacoubian, who completed the program, testified that Armenian teachers are sorely needed. Their role goes beyond teaching the language well; they are called upon to lift the fog of defeat from the spirits of Armenian children and bring them inner strength.
He recommended to students that they not hesitate and join the program with confidence. He thanked the two organizations for giving him the opportunity to become a well-trained Armenian teacher. Sarkis Yacoubian is an alumnus of the Hamazkayin M. & H. Arslanian Djemaran. After six years of advanced study, he is teaching at his alma mater.
To celebrate over ten years of collaboration, Rev. Dr. Haidostian presented Mr. Keshishian with a commemorative gift.
