
On August 6, 2025, an event honoring scholar and doctor of historical sciences Hagop Cholakyan was organized by the Yerevan Office of the Hamazkayin Armenian Educational and Cultural Society, at the initiative of its Central Executive Board. The event took place at the hall of the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia.
The purpose of the event was to recognize and appreciate Cholakyan’s invaluable contributions to Armenian studies, pedagogy, folklore, and literature, and to highlight his tireless work and legacy, which serves as a great asset for future generations. In high praise of his journey, the Hamazkayin Central Executive Board had decided to honor him with the Hamazkayin Medal of Honor.
An important part of Cholakyan’s educational and pedagogical work has been his authorship of school textbooks, which have been used for over three decades in Armenian elementary, middle, and high schools in the diaspora.
The event opened with welcoming and congratulatory remarks from Ruzan Arakelyan, director of the Hamazkayin Yerevan Office.
Various speakers reflected on Hagop Cholakyan’s life and work, including Academician Ashot Melkonian, Hamazkayin Central Executive Board Chairperson Zakar Keshishian, Central Executive Board member Garo Manjigian, retired educator Dikran Jinbashian from Lebanon, director of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography Arsen Bobokhyan, Ani Fishenkchyan, a researcher in the Western Armenian department of the H. Acharian Institute of Language of the National Academy of Sciences, and Cholakyan’s student Araks Matesyan. The event also featured the singing of lullabies, which added a special warmth to the tribute for the distinguished Armenian.
In honor of the occasion, the Armenia executive board of the National Karen Jeppe College Alumni Association sent a congratulatory letter, which was read aloud to the attendees.
Hamazkayin Central Executive Board Chairperson Zakar Keshishian presented Hagop Cholakyan with the Hamazkayin Medal of Honor on behalf of the board.
The tribute concluded with a reception.
