The Yerevan Office of the Hamazkayin Armenian Educational and Cultural Society on October 18, 2024, held an event dedicated to the memory of Lebanese-Armenian poet, prose writer, and philologist Bedig Hergelian (Bedros Herian).
A volume of his works, Endrani (Selection), was presented at the event. It includes works not published during the author’s lifetime. The book, published in 2020, was compiled and edited by Aleksandr Topchyan.
The event was initiated by the author’s brother Movses Hergelian. Among those present were the author’s friends, philologists, and Hamazkayin members
Hamazkayin Central Executive Board member Artashes Shabazyan gave a welcoming address.
Philologist Suren Abrahamyan spoke about the author’s creative life and his literary heritage, noting that he was a poet of the road and still had a long way to go to bring his magical words to literature. Alas, his life and his road were too short.
The educator Dikran Jinbashian was a close friend of the author’s. He said Hergelian had remarkable talent and his works will be read and live on for a long time.
Hergelian’s friends Sarkis Yedelian, Aren Hovsepian, Hovsep Seferian, and Sarkis Zeytlian also spoke.
The philologist Davit Gasparyan spoke about the author’s works, as did poets Hakob Movses and Henrik Edoyan.
Mr. Edoyan said, “When poets die, their literature stays behinds. That means they do not die. Yes, that is the habit of real poets. Bedig was one of them.”
Tsoler Shkhrdmian, one of the late honoree's students, recited the poem, “Hmayki dghan” (Boy wonder).
Mosves Hergelian thanked the Hamazkayin Yerevan Office for making the evening happen. The event ended with a reception. Attendees were given copies of the author’s book as keepsakes.
