The Hamazkayin “Oshagan” Chapter in Nicosia held its regular Cultural Evening on November 17, 2023. On this occasion it celebrated the poet Marianna Shahbaronyan.
Arto Tavitian, chairperson of the Chapter Executive Board, opened the program with an introduction of the poet. He noted that she had grown up and had learned Armenian away from Armenia and Armenians; her great affection for the homeland had led her to move to Armenia and write there.
Ms. Shahbaronian was invited to the stage. After a brief preface, she read a poem from her first book, “Tebi Hayasdan” (Toward Armenia). After the reading, she presented videos from her readings in various diaspora communities, which the audience appreciated.
Elen Antreasian, a talented member of the Hamazkayin “Sipan” Dance Ensemble, then read a Greek translation of the honoree’s poem “Syunik.”
Ms. Zara Parkhurtarian and the young Edgar Evoyian then sang “Shogher Jan,” “Kani voor Chan Im,” and “Chknagh Yeraz.”
At the conclusion of the program, the board said a few words of thanks and there was a wine reception and good conversation.
