On August 24, 2025, a book launch and reception for Kessab’s Uncle took place at noon at the Sahakian Hall. The event was organized by the Hamo Ohanjanian chapter of the Hamazkayin Armenian Educational and Cultural Society in Kessab, Syria. The book, by Manoushag Saghtijian-Panossian, daughter of the subject of the book, “Dayee” (Maternal uncle), was published in 2021.
The author attended, as did representatives of the relevant body, Hamazkayin Central Executive Board member Garo Manjigian, and Hamazkayin Regional Executive Board member Sosi Garjigian. Also in attendance were representatives of national organizations, as well as Kessab-Armenian culture enthusiasts.
Sevan Asadurian-Manjigian, master of ceremonies, delivered opening remarks. She highlighted the unique and unmatched character of Dayee in Kessab’s history, describing him as a patriotic, sacrificing, selfless, humble, virtuous, and dedicated knight to his people and village.
The program continued with a polished artistic presentation. Garod Ardziv Sarko, accompanied by Kayane Simonian-Derian on the organ, beautifully sang “Barzir Aghpyur,” Dayee’s favorite song. Asdghig Tanielian then recited “The Shepherd,” a poem written by Father Souren Papakhian and published in the Beirut daily Aztag in 1965, in memory of Kessab’s Dayee.
Marina Pendezian-Lntian presented the book, discussing its sections and contents. She focused on the historical challenges experienced by Dayee, born Ovsia Saghtijian, including the Adana Massacre, his migration to the United States and subsequent return to Kessab, the Genocide, the Armenian Legion, and the battles of Cyprus, Palestine, and Arara. She also touched upon the anarchy, self-defense, and reconstruction periods in Cilicia and Kessab. She further highlighted Dayee’s humanistic and sacrificial spirit, which led his community to affectionately call him Dayee, meaning maternal uncle.
The author, Ms. Saghtijian-Panossian, then spoke about the inspiration behind the book and the stages of its creation. She expressed her gratitude to the Hamazkayin Executive Board for organizing this unique event.
A ritual involving the book and red wine followed. The author and the board representatives participated in the ritual.
To conclude the event, Mr. Manjigian of the Central Executive Board delivered heartfelt remarks. He shared stories he had heard about Dayee from his grandfather and praised the day’s event as an unprecedented tribute to Kessab’s guardian hero.
