On Tuesday, April 8th, Hamazkayin had the honor of hosting an engaging lecture and book signing by Talinn Grigor, Professor of Art History at UC Davis, and Houri Berberian, Professor of History at UC Irvine. They presented the book they co-authored, "The Armenian Woman, Minoritarian Agency, and the Making of Iranian Modernity 1860-1979." We were enlightened by their lecture, which educated us on how modernization, nationalism, and feminism affected the history of Iranian women and minorities. They discussed their fascinating journey and the challenges they faced while skillfully analyzing, researching, traveling, and interviewing (from the beginning of the covid pandemic). Their impressive research and storytelling is a rich contribution to our history. We enjoyed it when they read excerpts from their book, after which we had meaningful discussions and the opportunity to purchase their book. With this remarkable book, Talinn Grigor and Houri Berberian offer the first history of Armenian women in modern Iran, and for that we are grateful!
