The Hamazkayin Nigol Aghpalian Chapter celebrated the 150th anniversary of its namesake’s birth on November 29, 2025 in an event held under the auspices of Archbishop Magar Ashkarian, Prelate of the Armenian Diocese of Syria, and organized by the Literary Committee of the chapter. Aghpalian was a cultivator of mind and education, a national leader, and one of the founders of Hamazkayin.
Caroline Kurklian emceed the event. Sona Chaloghlian read opening remarks on behalf of the committee. Maria Bodigian provided Aghbalian’s biography in detail. The program was enriched by Hagop Shakarian and Esther Gulthalian, who recited Jacques Hagopian’s poem, “Menk” (We).
Karen Kadehjian read excerpts from Antranig Dzarugian’s volume, Medzere yev Miusnere (The Greats and the others), concerning the personalities of Aghppalian and Levon Shant. Krisd Tavitian and Tvin Akkemian performed Sayat Nova’s “Tun en hurin is” as a duet.
Garo Manjigian, a member of the Hamazkayin Central Executive Board, visiting from Kessab, gave a keynote address. He spoke about the history and goals of Hamazkayin, and about the institutions it supports; he then reflected on the founders of the association, highlighting in particular Aghpalian’s activities and literary legacy.
Closing out the event, Nanar Babian-Kiledjian, a member of the Chapter Executive Board, expressed gratitude to the participants and everyone who contributed to its success.
The archbishop offered a closing prayer.
